Rio women earn 2nd place finish in KIAC

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Lucy Williams was one of three top 10 finishers for the University of Rio Grande, helping the RedStorm women’s cross country team to a runner-up finish at the 2015 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, Saturday morning, at the Rio Grande Cross Country Course.

Williams, a freshman from Athens, Ohio, finished fourth in a time of 19:25 and earned one of four berths to the NAIA National Championship reserved for individuals not on the winning team.

Point Park’s Katie Guarnaccia’s time of 18:57 was tops among the 82 runners in the 5K race, helping the Pioneers to the team title and a trip to the national meet, which is scheduled for Nov. 21 in Charlotte, N.C.

Sophomores Keri Lawrence (Reedsville, OH) and Rachel Ball (Chillicothe, OH) finished ninth and 10th, respectively, for the RedStorm with times of 20:02 and 20:20.

Rio Grande finished with 63 points as a team, 13 behind Point Park, while Asbury University finished a distant third with 91 points.

Among the others who participated in the championship for the RedStorm were freshman Maggie Dellinger (Washington Court House, OH), who was 17th in a time of 21:00; junior Alex Ellis (Ona, WV), who placed 23rd in a time of 21:39; sophomore Aubrey Dunfee (Baltimore, OH), who was 24th in 21:39; junior Katie Glover (Ashville, OH), who finished 25th in a time of 21:41; sophomore Emili Sannes (Carlisle, OH), who crossed in 36th place with a time of 22:19; freshman Jennifer Case (McArthur, OH), who was 53rd in 24:00; and junior Marissa McConaha (Duncan Falls, OH), who placed 66th in 27:50.

Runner-up Katy Falkenberg of Asbury University (19:06), third-place finisher Ivy Aleshire of WVU Tech (19:22) and fifth-place finisher Taryn Thor of Indiana-Kokomo (19:25), joined Williams as qualifiers for the national championship event.

Williams was among those earning All-KIAC First Team honors based on her finish in the race, while Lawrence and Ball were All-KIAC Second Team members. Dellinger was Rio’s Champions of Character representative.

The top seven individual finishers were named All-KIAC First Team, while finishers 8-14 were designated as Second Team selections.

Point Park head coach Kelly Parsley was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
