WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Six different players scored 10 points or more and host University of the Cumberlands scored 20 of the game’s final 26 points in a 90-72 triumph over the University of Rio Grande, Tuesday night, in non-conference men’s basketball action at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.
The Patriots, who had dropped the last three meetings in the all-time series between the schools by just 13 combined points, upped their record to 3-1 with the win.
Rio Grande slipped to 4-2 with the loss, closing out a four-game road swing with a 2-2 mark.
The Patriots’ late surge gave the appearance of a lopsided game when, in fact, it was a nip-and-tuck affair for the better part of 34 minutes.
UC led just 37-35 at halftime and had a slim four-point advantage, 70-66, following a short jumper in the lane by Rio senior center Dwayne Bazemore (Columbus, OH) with 6:37 left in the game.
But the Patriots finished the contest on a 20-6 run – including an 11-0 spurt – with five different players contributing to the effort.
Tre Boutilier and D’Lando Carter finished with 14 points each in the win, while the trio of Temjae Singleton, Xavier Owens and Kaashif English netted 12 points each and Kelsley Wilkinson added 10 points.
English also had a team-high nine rebounds for UC, which shot just under 52 percent from the field (16-for-31) in the second half.
Rio Grande, which was forced to deal with foul trouble in the post positions for most of the night, had four players reach double figures.
Senior D.D. Joiner (Columbus, OH) had a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Kevonta Black (Nashville, TN) netted 13 points, Bazemore had 11 and sophomore guard Will Hill (Worthington, OH) tossed in 10 points.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday night, hosting Wright State-Lake in the opening round of the Bevo Francis Tournament. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
Randy Payton is the Sports Information Director at the University of Rio Grande.
