Southern slips past Lady Tomcats, 31-29

RACINE, Ohio — It may not have been the prettiest of victories, but a win is a win.

The Southern girls basketball team shot less than 28 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers Thursday night, but the Lady Tornadoes were still able to claim a 31-29 victory over Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division guest Trimble.

Trimble (2-3, 1-2 TVC Hocking) outscored Southern (5-1, 4-0) 7-to-5 in the opening quarter and 10-to-7 in the second stanza, making the Lady Tomcats’ lead 17-12 at halftime.

The Purple and Gold cut the deficit to one point after a 10-to-6 third quarter run. Southern then outscored the Lady Tomcats 9-to-6 over the final eight minutes, securing the 31-29 Lady Tornado victory.

SHS seniors Jansen Wolfe and Ali Deem led the Purple and Gold with 10 points each, followed by Faith Teaford with five. Josie Cundiff posted three points, Sierra Cleland added two before fouling out, while Haley Hill rounded out the Southern scoring with one point.

Wolfe also led the Lady Tornadoes on the boards with 10 rebounds, followed by Teaford with eight and Macie Michael with five. Michael’s five assists marked a team-high, while Hill finished with two assists. Wolfe and Teaford rejected three shots apiece, while Cleland had one block in the win. Cleland posted a team-high three steals, followed by Teaford and Deem with two each.

Southern shot 6-of-15 (40 percent) from the free throw line and 11-of-40 (27.5 percent) from the field, including 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc. As a team the Purple and Gold had 32 rebounds, 10 assists, nine steals, seven blocks, 12 fouls and 24 turnovers.

The Lady Tomcats were led by Nikki Kish with 16 points, followed by Morgan Murphy with five and Sydney Hardy with four. Emily Ward and Payton Dixon rounded out the THS scoring with two points each.

Southern will try to sweep the Lady Tomcats on January 21, when the Purple and Gold invade Glouster. The Lady Tornadoes return to action on Thursday at Waterford. The Lady Tornadoes and Lady Wildcats are the final two teams that are unbeaten within the TVC Hocking.
