Lady Defenders holds off Hannan, 48-44

ASHTON, W.Va. — Just goes to show the importance of free throws.

The Ohio Valley Christian girls basketball team was held without a field goal over the final eight minutes of Tuesday night’s non-conference showdown at Hannan, but the Lady Defenders sank seven shots from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to seal the 48-44 victory.

Ohio Valley Christian (2-5) outscored the Lady Wildcats (2-5) 17-to-9 in the opening quarter, after connecting on three trifectas. Both teams scored seven points in the second period and the Lady Defenders held a 24-16 halftime lead.

OVCS sank three more triples in the third canto, and the guests’ lead was pushed to 41-32 headed into the fourth. Hannan — which held the Blue and Gold without a field goal in the final quarter — scored 12 points in the quarter but went 0-of-4 from the free throw line. OVCS made 7-of-13 free throw attempts over the final eight minutes to seal the 48-44 win.

Ohio Valley Christian junior Rachel Sargent led all-scorers with 26 points, including all seven of the Lady Defenders’ fourth quarter markers. Emily Childers scored 12 points on four trifectas, Kristen Durst and Katie Bradley each added three points, while Cori Hutchinson and Ashley Childers both finished with two points.

Sargent also led OVCS on the glass with 14 rebounds, followed by Bradley with 12. Emily Childers led the Lady Defenders on defense with six steals, followed by Sargent with five. For the game Ohio Valley Christian sank 12-of-22 free throws, equaling 54.5 percent.

HHS senior Clarissa Crank connected on three trifectas in the setback and led the Lady Wildcats with nine points, while Anna Taylor and Josie McCoy each added eight points. Cassidy Duffer scored seven points, Madison Staggs chipped in with five, while Lindsey Holley and Pamela Ochs rounded out the Hannan scoring with four and three points respectively. HHS made just 4-of-18 free throw tries in the game, equaling 22.2 percent.

These teams will battle again on February 2, in Gallipolis. Ohio Valley Christian — which faced Ironton St. Joseph on Tuesday — will host Covenant Christian on Saturday. Covenant Christian defeated the Lady Defenders earlier this season.

Hannan also returns to action against Covenant Christian, as they will meet on Monday in Huntington. The Lady Wildcats claimed a 34-25 victory over CCS on December 11, in Ashton.
