Spartans knock off Meigs, 80-69

ALBANY, Ohio — All good things must come to an end.

The Meigs boys basketball team dropped its first decision in a dozen games Friday night following an 80-69 setback to host Alexander in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division matchup at ‘The Alley’ in Athens County.

The visiting Marauders (11-1, 4-1 TVC Ohio) battled through three quarters to find themselves trailing by a slim 52-50 margin, but the Spartans (10-4, 4-2) responded with a 28-19 surge down the stretch to wrap up the 11-point outcome.

MHS twice trailed by eight points before finishing the first quarter down 21-20, then the Red, Black and White followed with a slim 15-13 run to secure a 36-33 cushion at the break. Meigs won the third quarter by a small 17-16 edge, which led to a two-point contest headed into the fourth.

The Maroon and Gold connected on 26-of-57 field goal attempts for 46 percent, including a 9-of-24 effort from behind the arc for 38 percent. The guests committed 17 turnovers and also went 7-of-16 at the free throw line for 44 percent.

Kaileb Sheets led MHS with 19 points, followed by Christian Mattox with 15 points and Colton Lilly with 13 markers. Luke Musser was next with 10 points, while Jared Kennedy chipped in seven markers.

Dillon Mahr and Jaxon Meadows rounded out the Meigs tally with respective efforts of three and two points. The guests were outrebounded by a 39-31 overall margin, with Sheets leading MHS with six boards.

The Spartans were 26-of-53 from the field for 49 percent, including a 7-of-19 effort from behind the arc for 37 percent. AHS committed 12 turnovers and also went 21-of-29 at the charity stripe for 72 percent.

Mason Chapman paced Alexander with a game-high 28 points, followed by Chace Harris with 16 points and Cory Chapman with 13 markers. Seth Richardson also added nine points to the winning cause.

Jake Weaver was next with six points and Kyle Howard contributed five markers. Michael Norris rounded out the Spartans’ tally with two markers.
