ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio — It took a little time, but the Marauders finally got back on track.

Twenty-four hours after suffering its first loss at Alexander, the Meigs boys basketball team bounced back with a 68-35 surge over the final three quarters Saturday night en route to a 75-46 victory over visiting Southern in a non-conference matchup at Larry R. Morrison Gymnasium.

The Marauders (12-1) improved their seasonal mark to 6-0 at home, but the Tornadoes (2-12) did everything they could early on to make things difficult after storming out an 11-7 edge through eight minutes of play.

The Maroon and Gold, however, responded with a 23-7 second quarter surge — led by Christian Mattox and Jared Kennedy with five points apiece — that led to a 30-18 cushion at the break.

Mattox added eight more points and Kaileb Sheets chipped in nine points as part of a 25-11 third quarter run, which allowed the hosts to break away for a 55-29 advantage headed into the finale. MHS closed regulation on a 20-17 run to wrap up the 29-point outcome.

Despite the slow start, Meigs connected on 25-of-56 field goal attempts for 45 percent — including a 9-of-28 effort from behind the arc for 32 percent. The hosts also committed 12 turnovers, compared to 20 by the Tornadoes.

Sheets led MHS with a game-high 19 points, followed by Mattox with 14 points and Luke Musser with 13 markers. Colton Lilly was next with nine points, while Kennedy and T.J. Williams each contributed seven points to the winning cause.

Zach Bartrum was next with four points and Tyler Fields rounded out the scoring with two markers. The Marauders were 16-of-28 at the free throw line for 57 percent. Musser led the hosts with nine rebounds.

Dylan Smith paced SHS with 14 points, followed by Tylar Blevins with 11 points and Jonah Hoback with six markers. Jaylen Blanks and Eli Hunter respectively chipped in four and three points for the guests as well.

Blake Johnson, Crenson Rogers, Brayden Cunningham and Trey Pickens rounded out the Tornadoes’ tally with two markers apiece. Southern netted six of its 18 field goals from behind the arc and also went 4-of-9 from the free throw line for 44 percent.

Both teams return to league play Tuesday as Meigs hosts Vinton County and Southern travels to Waterford. Both contests will start at 6 p.m.
