Scarlet Knights win Paul Wood title

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — There was Cabell Midland, then there was everyone else.

The Scarlet Knights nearly doubled up the 13-team boys field Thursday after cruising to the 2016 Paul Wood Track and Field Invitational championship held at Ohio Valley Bank Track and Field on the campus of Point Pleasant High School in Mason County.

CMHS posted a winning tally of 180 points, which ended up being well ahead of runner-up Buffalo and its score of 93 points. Point Pleasant was fifth with 43 points, while Wahama (40) and Hannan (4) respectively placed sixth and 12th overall.

The Black Knights top efforts came in the pole vault as Tate Hawkins and Trevor Hawkins respectively finished second and third with identical heights of 10 feet. Tate was credited with second place on a tiebreaker.

Sheb Harris finished third in the 400m dash with a mark of 53.05 seconds, while Joseph Clark was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 43 feet, 4 inches.

The PPHS quartet of Harris, Justin Brumfield, Grant Safford and Cason Payne also placed fourth in the 4x200m relay event with a time of 1:39.54.

The White Falcons had one event champion as the foursome of Brady Bumgarner, Nolan Pierce, Wesley Jones and Austin Juelfs posted a winning mark of 45.88 seconds in the 4x100m relay. The same quartet also finished third overall in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:36.96.

Jones also earned a pair of runner-up efforts in the 100m (11.48) and 200m (23.58) dashes, while Juelfs was third in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 3 inches.

Hannan’s lone top-four performance came from Chad Withers, who finished fourth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 48.01 seconds.

Cabell Midland won seven of the 18 events held in the boys competition.
