RACINE, Ohio — These Tornadoes are picking up the pace.

The Southern baseball team salvaged a season split while picking up its fourth win in five outings Monday night following a 6-3 triumph over visiting Trimble in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division matchup at Star Mill Park in Meigs County.

The Tornadoes (7-9, 6-4 TVC Hocking) picked up their second straight victory while also avenging a 4-3 setback to the Tomcats (7-4, 6-3) in Glouster back on March 31.

The hosts never trailed in the contest as the Purple and Gold scored a run apiece in the second, third and fourth frames, then erupted for three runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to establishing a comfortable 6-0 advantage.

THS answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to cut its deficit in half, but the guests were never closer as Southern faced the minimal three batters in the seventh — which wrapped up the three-run win.

After a scoreless first, Blake Johnson singled to start the bottom of the second and later scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 advantage. Trey Pickens singled home Dylan Smith in the third to make it a 2-0 contest, then Garrett Wolfe singled in Billy Harmon in the fourth for a 3-0 edge.

Southern’s big inning came in the fifth as Smith and Logan Drummer started things with back-to-back singles, then Pickens singled home Smith for a 4-0 contest.

Johnson received a walk that loaded the bases, then Harmon doubled in both Drummer and Pickens for a 6-0 advantage through five complete.

Cody Jones doubled in both Dante Brammer and Brandon Layton in the top of the sixth for a 6-2 contest, then Jones scored on a single by Ryan Richards for a three-run game.

The Tornadoes outhit the guests by a 13-7 overall margin and committed only one of the three errors through seven innings of play. THS stranded seven runners on base, while the hosts left four on the bags.

Johnson was the winning pitcher of record after allowing three earned runs, seven hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out 14. Andrew Losey took the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned), 13 hits and one walk over seven frames while fanning four.

Smith and Harmon paced SHS with three hits apiece, followed by Pickens with two safeties. Harmon and Pickens also drove in two RBIs each for the victors.

Johnson, Drummer, Wolfe, Clayton Wood and Logan Dunn also had a hit each for Southern. Johnson and Smith also scored two runs apiece for the Purple and Gold.

Jones and Richards led Trimble with two hits each, while Losey, Brammer and Layton added a safety apiece. Jones drove in a team-high two RBIs and also scored once in the setback.
