RACINE, Ohio — Not much in life is free, although the Southern High School softball squad took full advantage of free passes and free outs on Monday.
That’s because the host Tornadoes — benefiting from numerous walks and Federal Hocking errors — turned those free bases and at-bats into a 9-0 shutout at Star Mill Park in Racine.
Southern scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings — sandwiched amid a pair of three-run cantos in the fourth and sixth.
Meanwhile, Southern pitcher Sydney Cleland tossed a two-hit one-walk complete-game shutout, striking out seven including for all three outs in the fourth.
With the win, the Tornadoes raised their record to 9-7 — and 7-5 in the Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division.
The Lancers’ loss left them at 6-11 — and 4-9 in the league.
Southern sweeps Federal Hocking as a result, winning 15-1 in the two teams’ first matchup.
On Monday, Cleland retired the first nine Lancers she saw, including back-to-back strikeouts to close the second.
Dunfee for Federal Hocking broke up the perfect game with a leadoff single in the top of the fourth, then the next Lancer reached on an error.
But Cleland stranded the runners at second and third, as Tritipo singled in the seventh for Federal Hocking’s only other hit.
After a leadoff walk in the fifth, the next two Lancers reached base on back-to-back fielder’s choices, but failed to score.
Cleland then retired the Lancers 1-2-3 in the sixth.
Hannah Hill had two RBI-singles to pace the Tornadoes’ eight-hit attack, as her single in the second scored Cleland for the 2-0 lead.
In the first, Ali Deem doubled — and scored on an RBI-single by Paige VanMeter.
Deem also singled in the sixth, as Haley Hill and Savannah Bailey both singled in the fourth.
Brandy Porter poked a two-run double in the sixth for the 9-0 final score.
The Tornadoes returned to non-league action on Tuesday when they traveled to Ravenswood, and venture to Miller on Thursday for a TVC-Hocking doubleheader.
