Rebels snap long losing streak

MERCERVILLE, Ohio — It was in a slugfest, and it was long overdue, but the South Gallia High School baseball team finally has a victory.

That’s because the host Rebels ended a losing streak of at least 35 games on Friday, thanks to prevailing 16-10 over the visiting Federal Hocking Lancers in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division tilt.

The win was South Gallia’s first of the season in 16 tries, as its TVC-Hocking record now stands at 1-12.

Last season, the Rebels endured an 0-19 spring — and their second of consecutive winless (0-16) TVC-Hocking campaigns.

Prior to Friday, they last won two years ago in going 2-16, while their last league win was three years ago in finishing 1-15.

Speaking of 1-15, the Lancers — whose only win this season was a 7-5 decision over South Gallia in the two teams’ first meeting — concluded division play.

Federal Hocking fell to 1-18, and was done in by a whopping nine errors against the Rebels — despite outhitting them 13-7.

The Lancers led 2-1 after the opening inning, then scored four times in the second to lead 6-1 and appeared in command.

But the Rebels erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second, taking a 9-6 advantage that they tacked on two more runs to in the third.

Both teams exchanged a run in the fourth for a 12-7 score, as the Lancers scored a single point again in the sixth.

However, South Gallia got four markers back in its half of the sixth, doubling the lead (16-8) before Federal Hocking hit double figures with its final two runs in the seventh.

Both pitchers went the distance and endured high pitch counts, as Kyler Mills gained the victory for the Rebels.

Despite allowing 13 hits, only four of his 10 runs allowed were earned, as he walked three and struck out eight.

Mills threw 127 pitches, but Devon Maxey amassed 149 for Federal Hocking in taking the complete game loss.

Only five Rebel runs were earned, as Maxey gave up seven hits and nine walks with nine strikeouts.

Seven Rebels had hits, as Colton Coughenour bagged the only extra-base hit with a double.

Mills, Sheets, Cory Bryan, Brandon Rutt, Colton Bowers and Joey Woodall wound up with singles.

Mills, Bryan and Bowers boasted three runs batted in apiece, as Coughenour added one.

Maxey, Randall Torrence and Jacob Buck had three hits apiece for the Lancers, as Torrence and Maxey mustered triples.

The Rebels overcame five errors of their own.

South Gallia returns to TVC-Hocking action today (Tuesday, May 3) when it travels to Belpre for a makeup matchup.

The contest will conclude division play for South Gallia, which hosted Southern on Monday.
