Mothman meeting ‘Traveling Gnome’

POINT PLEASANT — The Mothman statue attracts people from all around the world, from all walks of life, and now, it has attracted the Travelocity Traveling Gnome.

Travelocity is a well-known online travel site and its mascot is the the Travelocity Traveling Gnome who is photographed around the country and around the world at various vacation destinations.

Denny Bellamy, who is the director of tourism in Mason County, said he was contacted by personnel with the West Virginia Division of Tourism about using the Mothman statue as a backdrop for one of the Travelocity Gnome’s appearances. Bellamy said those associated with this new media campaign will arrive on Monday at the statue.

More details on the visit were still emerging but Travelocity’s Traveling Gnome has been making stops in West Virginia this week, including at the Greenbrier Resort, Blackwater Falls and more. The gnome is photographed or filmed at tourist destinations and promoted on various social media platforms with the help of Travelocity which books travel for those around the world.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Mothman being spotted in Mason County and the 15th year of the Mothman Festival.
