Victorious: Students win during open tournament

POINT PLEASANT – Five students enrolled in the S.H. Kang’s Taekwondo Academy on Main Street in Point Pleasant recently brought home many trophies won during the 38th Annual U.S. Open Tournament.

“For some of these students, it was their first tournament ever,” Master Pam Siders said. “They performed outstanding.”

The event, which was held in Charleston on March 5, featured three categories of competition in Forms, Breaking and Sparring.

Those participating were Arianna Jordan, Deidra Hall, Austin Lyons, Jamey Lee and Griffin Stanley.

The Academy instructors are Master Ted Siders, 6th Dan Chief Instructor, and Master Pam Siders, 6th Dan Instructor. Also at the event were Jared Stephens, 2nd Dan.

Among the five participants, a total of seven trophies were brought home.

Winners included: Jordan, 1st Gup, second place in Sparring; Deidra Hall, 1st Gup, first place in Forms; Austin Lyons, 4th Gup, first place in Forms and third place in Sparring; Jamey Lee, 3rd Dan Assistant Instructor, third place Breaking Competition; and Griffin Stanley, 6th Gup, second place in Sparring and third place in Breaking.

“We want to congratulate everyone and give a hearty thanks to all who were in attendance and those who helped judged and make the tournament possible,” Siders said. “There were several hundred in attendance.”
