Earlier this week, Michael Haynie, 48, entered a plea of guilty to one count of interstate travel to commit a crime that resulted in the death of another, which carries a sentence of life in prison; one count of murder with a firearm, which carries a mandatory 10 years to life imprisonment; and one count of conspiracy, which carries up to 20 years in prison.
Haynie entered the plea agreement in U.S. District Court in Columbus.
On June 7, Haynie and Adam McClellan, 28, of Zanesville, Ohio, allegedly entered the Ann Street home of Christopher Ray Roush, where Haynie allegedly shot Roush in the head then fled the scene.
Troopers with the Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police responded to the call of the shooting and conducted a six-week investigation and manhunt to find the suspects. Because their investigation led to the suspects fleeing toward the Columbus area, the troopers asked for assistance from the Columbus office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
In his plea agreement, Haynie recounted the actions he and McClellan had taken. He said he and McClellan drove to Roush’s home to rob him of money and drugs, according to published reports.
After entering the house, Haynie said he struck another man in the head with a gun, which apparently discharged. He then admitted to striking the man again, with the gun discharging again. That discharge caused a bullet to hit Roush in the head, killing him instantly.
The men then fled to Ohio toward the Columbus area, where Haynie was arrested by agents with the FBI July 21. McClellan turned himself in to the FBI July 30.
Both were indicted by a federal grand jury in Columbus in late August.
Troopers also were investigating another person of interest who was not arrested at the time.
Haynie will be sentenced at a later date.
