Nellie Mae Smith, 87, of Hartford, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at his residence with family by her side.

She was born Jan. 28, 1924 in Hartford, a daughter of the late William Sr. and Nellie (Wein) MacKnight.

Nellie was a 1941 graduate of Wahama High School. She was the former owner of Smith’s Grocery in Hartford, and a member of the Hartford United Methodist Church, the Hartford Water Department, and Moose Lodge No. 731. Additionally Nellie was a professional seamstress, volunteer with the Upper Mason Food Pantry, and was an avid golfer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Smith, Jr.; sisters, Addie MacKnight, and Julia MacKnight; and brothers, George Adam MacKnight, and William MacKnight, Jr.

Nellie was the loving mother of a daughter, Shirley (Edgar) Wright, Jr. of Marietta, Ohio; and a son, John H. IV (Bonnie) Smith of Hartford; a caring grandmother of Michelle (Jeremy) Tate of Hermitage, Tenn., Michael (Desiree) Wright of Madison, Tenn., John H V (Courtney Long) of Hartford, and Ian Thomas (Shareen) Smith of Letart. She also is survived by a great grandson, Jordan Wright; sister-in-law, Ernestine MacKnight; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 17, at Foglesong-Roush Funeral Home with Rev. Rex Young officiating. Burial will follow in Graham Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at the funeral home.
