POINT PLEASANT — After months of fundraiser, the 2011 Mason County Relay for Life is finally here.

The relay will take place today at the Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School Athletic Complex. This marks the 14th year of the Mason County Relay for Life, which is an event that raises funds for the American Cancer Society.

Relay events will get underway with the Little Mr. & Miss Make a Difference/Pretty Baby Contest at 3:30 p.m. and the car show at 5 p.m. The relay will then officially start at 6 p.m., with the survivor lap slated for 6:15 p.m. At 7 p.m. there will be an auction. The annual luminary ceremony also is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. According to Angela Lanier, one of the relay’s organizers, the public is urged to attend this evening’s event.

“Everyone is welcome — bring lawn chairs. There’s entertainment and free food,” she said.

According to Lanier, 15 teams are set to participate in this year’s relay. She described the relay as being important on many levels.

“The relay event is very important because the money raised helps cancer patients and their families with many programs offered in our community as well as going to research,” Lanier said. “The event also brings together the community to celebrate the survivors of cancer and remember those who have lost their lives to cancer.”

According to Lanier, organizers hope to collect $25,000 by the end of today’s relay event.

“We have met our goal in past years. Last year the county raised over $40,000. We hope to meet our goal of $47,000 by Aug. 31.,” she said.

Lanier added that those wishing to donate to the cause can make checks payable to the American Cancer Society, located at 611 7th Ave., Suite 101, Huntington, WV 25701. Memo each check for “Mason County Relay for Life.”

The Mason County Relay for Life will end at midnight. For more information, visit the Mason County Relay for Life Facebook page.
