GALLIPOLIS FERRY — Saturday will provide residents with a chance to both exercise and help an important cause.

The first ever “Shake for Sugar” Zumbathon and silent auction will take place Saturday, Aug. 6 from 2-5 p.m. at Beale Elementary School. The event is being hosted by the West Virginia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The event will help to raise funds for diabetes awareness within the region. Sugarfree, a volunteer based fundraising team, is working with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to help find better treatments and a cure for Type 1 diabetes. Through the Zumbathon, Sugarfree hopes to donate money to the JDRF, which will help millions of Type 1 diabetics have more advanced treatments and possibly a cure.

Saturday’s Zumbathon will kick off with a silent auction. The auction will continue during the event as well as proceed over the course of one week on the Insulin is Not a Cure Facebook page. Several items have been donated for the auction, including the following: a one night stay, two cooked-to-order breakfasts and valet parking at the Mardi Gras Casino and Resort; Pump Up the Fun premium party; one full session with Trey Barker Photography; two Dollywood one-day admission tickets; two one-touch ultramini glucose meters and carrying cases; Mary Kay limited-edition item gift basket; $25 gift certificates to Brittany’s Fashions; $25 gift certificate for Mary Kay products; Primitive Glow Candle from Fruth Pharmacy; and a sports bag donated by Hibbett Sports.

For more information on Saturday’s event, contact Heather Crum at 304-675-7718 or e-mail hcrum41@gmail.com. For more information on the JDRF, visit the Web site, www.jdrf.org.
