Mason County Idol finalists chosen

NEW HAVEN — The 2011 Mason County Idol competition is heating up.

On Saturday, the idol audition concert was held at the Bend Area Community Center in New Haven. During the concert, contestants sang their hearts out in hopes of be chosen to advance in the competition.

Seven contestants were selected to compete in the idol competition, which starts Monday, Aug. 8 at the Mason County Fair. This year’s idol contestants are: Katie Hendricks, Tamra Hardwick, Amy Lewis, Brittany Blankenship, Lexie Layne, Nicole Smith and Cadence Weaver.

Idol contestants will perform Monday through Friday of the fair at 3 p.m. on the inside stage. One contestant will be voted off each day until the idol finals, slated for Friday, Aug. 12. The remaining contestants will compete at the final elimination. Eliminated contestants along with Shelby Gerlach, 2010 Mason County Idol, also will return to perform. At the final elimination’s conclusion, the 2011 Mason County Idol winner will be announced.

According to Bernita Allen, event organizer, the winner will be determined by a combination of judges’ scores and popular vote. The new idol will then take to the main stage at 7 p.m. Friday evening and will open for Chase Likes, Point Pleasant native and former American Idol contestant. The newly declared idol winner also will be awarded a trophy and cash prize. Second and third place idol winners will receive trophies and cash prizes as well.
