WELLSTON — There was little analysis needed to figure out what happened in Monday’s girls basketball contest between Meigs and Wellston.

Wellston, simply put, just couldn’t get the ball in the hoop.

The Lady Rockets (1-9, 0-5 TVC-Ohio) struggled mightily on offense in suffering their fourth defeat of 47 points or more this season, falling 64-12 to visiting Meigs Monday night in Wellston.

Meigs (5-6, 2-3 TVC-Ohio) forced several Wellston turnovers in the early portion of the game thanks to a smothering press leading to a 16-0 advantage in the first quarter.

And it was all downhill from there for the home team.

The Lady Rockets didn’t score their first points of the game until midway through the second quarter while Meigs continued to have a consistent night from the floor, adding 13 more points to extend its lead to 29-4 at the break.

Meigs backed off from its attack in the second half but still managed to pile on points, outscoring the hosts 16-5 in the third quarter. The Lady Marauders wrapped up the night with their best quarter of play — scoring 19 points — while Wellston added three more to its total for a final of 64-12.

Meigs snapped a three-game slide with the win.

The Lady Marauders were led by senior guard Catie Wolfe who dropped 25 points on the Lady Rockets. Tricia Smith was next for the visitors with 11 points followed by Miranda Grueser with six points and Morgan Howard with five points.

Wellston’s high points came from Paige Roark who had four points. Mackenzie Bragg was next with three points, Katie Woolum and Brittany Walker had two points each and Brittany Wires had one point.

Not only was Monday’s 52-point loss their fourth loss of 47 or more points this season, but the 12 points scored tied a season low for the Lady Rockets.

Meigs will return to action Thursday when it hosts Belpre. The JV contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
