Dear Editor,

It has been observed that those in nursing homes need special attention.

They need visitors badly. Some of them need to be taken out; for example, they need to be taken shopping or out to dinner. Those who can’t leave the nursing home need items brought to them. Some people need someone to talk to, while others need someone to sit and read to them. The Bible is a good example of reading material. What about just sitting with someone and watching TV awhile? Do what the individual wants.

We are asking able-bodied citizens to go that extra mile and adopt someone who is confined to a nursing home.

The people in nursing homes are crying out for visitors. They are our past leaders and still honorable citizens. They have lived their lives caring for others. Let’s give back some of that compassion. They are our fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles. Some have no relatives left.

You and I will be elderly someday, God willing. We will be among the old and sick, maybe blind, deaf and crippled. We will be crying out for companionship and understanding. Who will be there with us to give us comfort in our old age?

Come to the “Helping Hands of Mercy” meeting and bring a friend. Bring ideas on how to help the less fortunate than we are.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church fellowship hall.

Sincerely,

Janet Hurlow,

Mason

A simple solution would be to organize every church youth group to volunteer. Setup a program that reaches out to teens. Have each church youth group have a bulletin board to decorate each month, and have them judged by the nursing home persons. Have each group plan events to spend time once a month at the nursing home. If 10 church youth groups participated, just imagine how much time could be spent with them.

There are alot of older people who would love to have someone young to tell stories too.

If you are a youth leader, you should contact Janet, or show up at the "Helping Hands of Mercy". Give your support to spend one evening a month at the Nursing home. Teens will remember it forever. I know I do.
