CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Lady Falcons traveled to the capital city Wednesday night for their first road trip of the season where they met up with 2011-12 state quarter finalist Charleston Catholic. Wahama was outscored 38-12 in the first half as the Irish cruised to a 53-27 victory in their season opener.
Charleston Catholic (1-0) held the Lady Falcons (0-2) to just four points in the opening stanza while the Irish offense went for 16 points. WHS scored eight points in the second quarter but CCHS scored 22 to take the 26 point lead into the half.
The Lady Falcon offense scored 10 points in the third quarter but trailed 52-22 headed into the finale. Wahama’s defense held Charleston Catholic to just one point in the fourth quarter but the Irish were still able to take the 53-27 victory.
Mackenzie Gabritsch led the Red and White with nine points in the game including five points from the charity stripe. Sierra Carmichael finished with seven points, all coming in the second half, while Paige Gardner finished with six points. Kelsey Zuspan finished with five points, all coming in the second quarter, to round out the WHS scoring.
Zuspan pulled to nine rebounds to lead WHS, followed by Gardner with eight, Carmichael with four and Gabritsch with three.
Anna Whelan led the victors with 18 points including four three-pointers to go along with seven steals and five assists. Samantha Fletcher finished with 10 points, Madison Hemlock notched nine points, while Christina O’Dell and Simone Assaley each finished with eight points. Assaley led the Irish with eight rebounds.
WHS shot 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from the free throw line while Charleston Catholic went 8-of-13 (61.5 percent).
Wahama is set to face the Irish again on January 30th in Mason.
