MASON COUNTY — For the first time in a few election cycles, the Mason County Commission has a new face with Tracy Sturgeon Doolittle taking the chair formerly occupied by Bob Baird.
This new version of the Mason County Commission met for an organizational meeting and its first regular meeting of the year this week.
During the organizational meeting, Rick Handley was once again elected as commission president. Handley was nominated by Commissioner Miles Epling with both Epling and Doolittle voting for the nomination. Doolittle then nominated Epling for president pro-tem with Doolittle and Handley voting for the nomination.
Commissioners then approved the following Board of Equalization dates: 3-3:30 p.m., Feb. 1, 6; 9-9:30 a.m., Feb. 9; 3-3:30 a.m., Feb. 12; 3:30-4 p.m., Feb. 14, 21.
Commissioners then approved meeting times for 4 p.m. the last three Thursdays of the month. Upcoming meetings include 4 p.m., Jan. 17, 31 and 4 p.m., Feb. 14, 21.
Once the organizational meeting was out of the way, the first regular meeting of the Mason County Commission began with Handley reporting new Mason County Sheriff Greg Powers was working on a list of prospective employees for the commission to review.
Doolittle requested the county commission contact the West Virginia Division of Highways about putting up a highway sign to note Mason County being home of the Class A State Football Champion Wahama White Falcons. Epling and Handley agreed and felt the county should recognized it in some unique way.
Handley announced the county is starting a contest open to any Mason County resident to design a county seal - the county has never had a county seal. The seal should reflect the county’s culture, geography, etc. There will be a monetary award and the winner will be announced on March 7. Submissions are due by Feb. 21 and can be made personally to any commissioner or dropped off in the office of Mason County Clerk Diana Cromley or County Administrator John Gerlach.
Commissioners also recognized Mario Liberatore and Diana Barnette of Ohio Valley Bank during the meeting. OVB has recently placed an ATM in the Mason County Courthouse on the second floor - the courthouse’s first ATM.
Commissioners appointed Damon Morgan to the Civil Service Commission.
Commissioners approved annual membership dues in the Polymar Alliance Zone (PAZ) which is $500 a year.
