MASON COUNTY — Locals who own wooded properties and wonder what projects might be available to make them more productive will soon have a chance to do so.

In conjunction with the West Virginia Woodland Owners Association, an educational tour has been set for Mason County from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, for those interested in these kinds of projects for their own land or for information about other woodland owners’ projects used to improve their land.

Host landowner Bob Alexander will lead the tour and will share the work he and his family have accomplished. Alexander will inform attendees about some key strategies in maintaining access roads, controlling invasive plants, harvesting timber, and planting oak and other tree species. The tour group will also visit wildlife food plots and habitat areas on the property.

This walking tour will cover generally flat ground with a few relatively steep sections, so it is recommended for those attending to wear sturdy walking shoes. The tours are sponsored by the West Virginia Woodland Owners Association, WVU Appalachian Hardwood Center/ Extension Service, West Virginia Forestry Association, the WV Tree Farm, and the WV Stewardship Programs.

For more information on the Woodland Association, there will be the association’s annual meeting and seminar will be held from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 in at the Wood Technology Center in Elkins, W.Va. Lunch will be served from 12-1 p.m. and will include a luncheon speaker. A tour of the Wood Tech Center is scheduled from 2:30-3 p.m. Also, five (Category 1) CFE Credits are being offered.
