Members of the Charlie’s Angels Relay for Life team at the First Church of God on Jefferson Avenue in Point Pleasant are planning their second annual golf tournament, slated this year for Saturday, May 2 at Riverside Golf Club in Mason. The team has been working diligently to raise money for the American Cancer Society in honor of their late friend, Charlie Lilly, for whom the team is named.
After a successful 2008 season — the team, which boasts approximately 100 members, raised $25,000 on its way to being named the county’s first place team — members are stopping at nothing to make sure they can raise even more money this year.
That means organizing fundraisers and raising awareness as often as possible. According to Wendy Lilly, the team stays involved with the American Cancer Society throughout the year and hosts a number of fundraisers, including monthly dinners at the church.
But team members hope to raise even more money through the golf tournament, which is a four-person scramble with shotgun start. Additional details include that there is a minimum 40 handicap for participants, and players over the age of 60 will golf from a “senior tee.”
Lilly added that last year’s event raised $12,500, and 120 people already are registered for this year’s event. She also said the tournament is one the team’s namesake would appreciate.
“(Charlie) was a wonderful person,” Wendy Lilly said of her sister. “Everyone loved her. No one ever had anything bad to say about her.”
She added that even though her sister was fighting her own battle with breast cancer — a battle she lost at the age of 38 in November 2005 — she continued to remain upbeat and even sent cards and food to others who were under the weather.
Charlie Lilly also was a teacher and attended the First Church of God, and the support the team has received from the church has been immeasurable, according to team members.
The local Relay for Life is scheduled for Saturday, May 16 at the Mason County Fairgrounds.
