Dear Editor:

I would like to ask your readers in West Virginia’s Second Congressional District to contact their elected representative, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, and express their support for HR 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009.

As the title suggests, the purpose of the bill is to amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to increase the safety of foods in the global marketplace. One needs to look no further than the peanut butter recall of 2009 to see the need for the amendment. In this case, Peanut Corp. of America distributed its product in bulk to food service companies, which in turn, used it in dozens of snack items. Eight deaths and 501 illnesses in 43 states are thought to be linked to the salmonella outbreak.

Think of how you would feel if those victims were family members, then do the right thing. Congresswoman Capito’s Charleston office may be reached at (304) 925-5964, or you may visit her website at http://capito.house.gov/.
