POINT PLEASANT — It may only be the beginning of November, but Christmas is just around the corner and residents of Lakin Hospital are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the jolly old man in the red suit.

During this holiday season, communities are coming together in order to make a more merry Christmas for many. Making special visits to Lakin Hospital is one of those activities that the residents have enjoyed in the past and is also one they are looking forward to this year.

Addie Roberts, Activity Supervisor of Volunteer Services at Lakin Hospital thanks the community for its generosity in the past and is looking forward to seeing the help continue this holiday season.

If you are interested in taking part in Operation Santa Claus at Lakin Hospital, you can help in a variety of ways.

Whether you would like to present a cantata or other program through your church, club or organization, or if you want to donate gifts or make monetary donations, your help goes a long way in making a special holiday for the people at the hospital.

If you choose to make a monetary donation to support the cause, the staff will do the shopping for purchasing Christmas gifts. This donation may also be used for other resident activities or events during the year, if need be. Checks need to be made payable to Lakin Hospital/Operation Santa Claus.

However, you can also donate a list of items. Here is a list of suggested gifts:

Women: open back dresses, button up sweaters, sweat shirts and pants, gowns and open back gowns, knee socks, anklets, footies, cosmetics, nail polish, perfume, bath powder, inexpensive jewelry, wrist and pendant watches, jewelry boxes, change purses, and wallets.

Men: sport shirts, pull over shirts, flannel shirts, button up sweaters, sweat shirts and pants, jeans (size 38 waist and larger), elastic waist slacks, pajamas, socks, tee shirts, briefs and boxer shorts, belts, suspenders, after-shave lotion, pre-shave lotion, and wrist and pocket watches.

Sizes for both men and women which are needed the most range anywhere from a large to a 3XL.

Miscellaneous gift items can include hats, caps, gloves, mittens, handkerchiefs, bandannas, hand and body lotion, stationary, music box, musical toys, body pillows, puzzle books, word search books (large print), cans of soda, hand held games, puzzles, calendars, pictures, posters, sun catchers, washable dolls, sunglasses, shampoo and conditioner, radios, cassette and CD players, music CD’s, picture albums, chewing gum, and soft candy and cookies.

According to Roberts, due to the vast amount of shopping, sorting, wrapping, etc., it is asked that you call and schedule any programs or visits as soon as possible. If you are donating gifts (money or other), the deadline is Dec. 11, 2009. It is also asked that you leave you gift unwrapped, as it will be sorted and marked for each individual resident.

The address is Operation Santa Claus, c/o Lakin Hospital, 11522 Ohio River Road, Lakin, WV 25287.

If you have any questions, you can contact Roberts at (304) 675-0860 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
