This is certainly the case for Missi Scarberry, region retail manager of City National Bank. Although she has held her current position for nine years, Scarberry has worked at the bank for 25 years.
According to Scarberry, she has done almost every type of job at the bank.
“I started out answering the phone. I was a teller, a secretary, worked collections, was a loan officer, a training officer and an administrative assistant,” she said.
Scarberry said that while she never intended to pursue a career in the banking industry, she has always appreciated the job.
“I was working at Fruth and an opportunity to answer phones here came up. I applied for the job not having any intention of working in banking for so long, but I really have loved it here. I’ve been very blessed to have a job I love,” she added.
Scarberry described her job as always being exciting.
“It’s never been boring. When I first came to work here my supervisor said that it wouldn’t be long until things were ‘back to normal.’ Things have never seemed normal to me — it is constant change,” she said.
For example, Scarberry said that the way the bank operates has drastically changed.
“Now it is all computerized. So now we can focus our attention on taking care of people as opposed to the mechanics of actually getting things done,” she added. “When I first came here we were very operationally focused and now we are more people focused.”
In fact, Scarberry noted the bank’s constant change as the most interesting aspect of her job.
“The fact that the regulations chance fairly often is interesting. There always seems to be something new that we have to comply with. We constantly have regulatory change — this is not a job where you come in and do the same thing each day for 25 years,” she said.
As for her favorite part of working at City National, Scarberry said that she enjoyed working with people. She described the employees and customers as having a ‘family atmosphere.’
“I do like the people. I like my co-workers and the people who come in here. You get to know people over the years and I’ve seen a lot of kids grow up,” she said.
With the family atmosphere, Scarberry said that she has formed several lasting memories during her time at City National. However, she described working as a loan officer as one of her fondest memories.
“I just enjoyed working with people who wanted to get a new home. I enjoyed giving them advice, and it was nice seeing someone go from renting to owning their own home — it is very rewarding,” she said.
With her current position, Scarberry’s responsibilities include being in charge of all five City National Bank offices in Mason and Jackson Counties as well as working with the branch managers of each office. She also does a lot of sales focused work, makes sure that the bank is compliant with various rules and regulations and takes care of the budget.
When Scarberry isn’t working at the bank, she is very involved with the community, specifically the Mason County Community Foundation. Scarberry serves on the foundation’s board of directors and marketing committee. She also was instrumental in getting the foundation’s youth fund started last year.
“The community foundation is very close to my heart. With the foundation you are building funds that will stay in the community,” Scarberry said.
For example, the foundation is starting a new arts and education fund this year.
“We are very excited about that. It will serve organizations in the community and schools — there is a need for it,” Scarberry said of the education fund.
Aside from the community foundation, Scarberry is a member of the Local School Improvement Council.
Scarberry encouraged others to embrace life and to not sweat the small things.
“Do not worry so much about the little things in life because they have a tendency to take care of themselves,” she said.
This is certainly one piece of advice that Scarberry has applied to her own life as she continues to embrace each day of work with a positive attitude.
