He was born June 22, 1929 in East Lynn, a son of the late Howard Adkins and Lilly (Saunders) Adkins.
Charles was a member of the Gallipolis Christian Church and was retired with 33 years of service from Kaiser Aluminum. He also was a Veteran of the United States Airforce and a graduate of Milton High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Adkins.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva L. (Lawhon) Adkins of Point Pleasant; a son, Dwight Adkins and wife, Lori of Point Pleasant; a daughter, Donna Leach and husband, Worthy of Point Pleasant; a sister, Ethel Shockley of Huntington; a brother, Oscar Adkins of St. Cloud, Fla.; five grandchildren, Colleen Blas Arrington, Joshua Isaiah Adkins, Shannon Johnson (Wayne) Pearson, Corie Adkins (Bo) White, and Colter Alan Adkins; nine great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Arrington, Garriett Litchfield, Gideon Arrington, Bodie White, Lilly White, Sophie White, Dryden Pearson, Wyatt Pearson and Colten Pearson; nine nieces; and 13 nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 23, at Ridgelawn Cemetery Chapel in Huntington with Pastor Michael Lynn officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgelawn Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be given by the West Virginia Honor Guard. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Saturday, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home.
