YOUR OPINION: Disappointed

Dear Editor:

My husband and I took our grandson to see the Seige of Fort Randolph at Krodel Park. I was sorely disappointed in our experience.

Our grandson is 5 years old, very inquisitive, but was well behaved. We visited two tents. In the first one the gentleman who was selling trinkets chastised him for touching a wooden fan and at the second one a lady told him not to touch a brass lock that was so large he couldn’t have picked it up if he wanted to. She said it wasn’t for sale and was very old. Needless to say, we left shortly thereafter without making a purchase.

We felt that our grandson would benefit from the educational experience; however, there was not one person at any of the stations who made eye contact with us, much less explained what part they were playing in the history of the seige. We did not stay for the battle and I doubt that we will attend any more of these reenactments.

I do hope that some changes are made so that other visitors will not feel like it is a waste of time. My point to all of this is, children love to touch things as do adults. This is how most people learn. Please don’t chastise them for wanting to handle things. If you don’t want them handled, put them in a case where they won’t be.

To the people who are participating in the reenactment, please talk to the visitors, it will make them want to come back to visit again.
