Candidate visit

Dear Editor:

The county got a surprise Tuesday, Aug. 3 when senatorial candidate John Raese visited the area and toured several businesses. He listened to complaints and suggestions when it comes to government and business.

Mr. Raese ended his day speaking at the Mason County Tea Party meeting. He stated that he was a true conservative, a small business owner and knew what the state needed to prosper.

No more Washington politics and time to start listening to The People.

Other speakers were Mike Hall, who was there to support Raese, and Christy Lindsey, parental rights activist, speaking about the Parental Rights Amendment.

Fair chair thieves

Dear Editor:

I really enjoyed the Mason County Fair every day up until Saturday afternoon when the rain and bad weather came.

First, the storm came.

Second, Marty Stuart concert was canceled.

Third, someone stole my lawn chairs. After the concert was canceled and the storm was over, I went back to get my chairs and they were gone. There was two other ladies that I know of their chairs were stolen, too.

I guess I’m too trusting. Who would have thought thieves would go through there in that storm and steal chairs.

Cemetery vandalism unacceptable

Dear Editor:

In June 2008, our family laid to rest in the Kirkland Memorial Gardens Cemetery, our beloved sister and mother, Sonya Jo Mayes Call.

Until recently, her “rest” has been undisturbed and her family has tended to her grave with the care that she truly deserves. We say, “until recently.”

In the last several months someone has repeatedly vandalized and desecrated her grave; custom-made floral arrangements and “glow in the dark” angels have been stolen, broken and strewn about … we frequently find her flowers torn and scattered all over the grave and, most disturbing, we’ve found her angel, placed on a gravesite several yards away! (recognizable by our own markings at the base)

We have tried to deal with this vandalism and theft by purchasing new flower arrangements and purchasing new angels, only to return within weeks to find the same, senseless, cruel mistreatment has occurred. The last time we found that our angel had been removed and placed on the neighboring grave, we left it there, assuming the thief was unable to purchase one of his own and we’d replace Sonya’s once more.

Can you imagine our shock and dismay when we returned only to find her previous angel still on the “neighbor’s” grave, and the new one (just purchased in July) smashed and broken and left scattered on the gravesite along with the flowers in which it rested?

The Kirkland management is unable to provide security for the cemetery, so we have had no choice but to contact the Mason County Sheriff’s office. The local law enforcement offices have assured us that “desecration of a grave is a crime” and that they will increase their patrols in Kirkland and they will be on-the-lookout for anyone who would continue this heinous crime against our beloved sister and mother.

We are requesting that if anyone witnesses more vandalism on this grave we would appreciate your contacting Deputy Sheriff Terry at the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.
